Recently, I met a couple who got their home tested for mold and spent an exorbitant amount of money for what is considered a basic test. They paid just over two thousand dollars for 4 air samples, two surface samples and a visual inspection. But how much should a test cost? Generally, air sampling runs between $90 and $120 per sample, and surface testing should be between $100 and $140 per unit. This home owner paid $300 per air and surface sample and $250 just for a visual test. Their test cost $2,050 total for something we would charge $600 for. Always ask the mold inspection contractor about the costs prior to their arrival, ask about the lab their results are coming from, and price them out with some other contractors as well. This will help you avoid being scammed and overpaying for a test like these unfortunate people did.
