This is a very different blog than I usually write, since most of our blogs are about mold, water damage, fire, safety and many other types of health and home improvement issues. With New Years approaching, I wanted to discuss something I see every year at the gym. Usually around this time and especially after January 1st, there is an influx of new people crowding the gym trying to stick to their New Year’s Resolution by getting into shape. We’ve all done it. We’ve all looked into the future and seen ourselves on a beach or by a pool in chiseled shape making everyone around us gawk and bathe in jealousy. But come February, about 50% of the newbies stop coming or come very sporadically, and by March 80% are gone and the gym is empty again. Now there’s a brief return of those people in late April and early May who are still trying to have that big dream stuffed into a very small window, but come Memorial Day, they’re all gone and the gym is empty again till Christmas.
You hear the same excuses about having no time or being too busy, and how hard their work schedule is, but I really don’t believe it. Why? Because I personally work 100 to 120 hours a week and rarely have a day off. So how am I able to stay in shape? Because I sacrifice some sleep and and wake up each day at 5 in the morning, at the gym by no later than 5:45 am, and am finished by 6:30 to 6:45 at the latest. I’m back home by about 7, answering emails, writing blogs, finishing estimates, drafting contracts, communicating with my employees, jumping in the shower and then heading out the door by 8:30 to 9 to start my rounds of estimates. I then check on all jobs in progress, get back to the office to answer calls and schedule appointments, and do a slew of other things that aren’t that interesting or would take another blog to detail. The main sacrifice is that I don’t stay up late, so I can still get some sleep in order to wake up early to get to the gym, and do this 4 to 5 times a week.
What’s the point of all of this? It’s an attempt to urge you to find time, get in shape, eat healthier and stick to your resolution which has probably repeated itself for many years. By getting into shape and eating healthier it is a fact that you will not only feel better and benefit from it physically, but it does amazing things to you mentally. You become happier, more energetic, more confident and the list goes on. So if this serves as a little encouragement, then I did my job. Let’s all live a happier and healthier life and start in 2016. Oh, and one last thing, be kind to animals!!!
